5G  uses a much wider range of frequencies, including high-frequency millimeter waves (mmWave), which previous generations couldn't access.

Generally, 5G enhances the existing features of digital signage, however, it would be a bit of an oversimplification to say it's not introducing entirely new features.

Dedicated Network Slices: 5G network slicing enables the creation of completely isolated, virtual networks for digital signage applications, guaranteeing performance and reliability levels that weren't achievable with previous network technologies. This means digital signs can function without interference from other devices or network traffic, ensuring a consistent and high-quality user experience.
  1. Massive IoT Device Management: mMTC in 5G allows for the connection and management of a much larger number of IoT devices than previous generations. This is essential for large-scale digital signage deployments, where thousands of signs can be remotely monitored, updated, and controlled with unprecedented efficiency.
  1. True Real-Time Interactivity: While some interactivity was possible with 4G, URLLC in 5G takes it to a new level by minimizing latency to the point where it's virtually imperceptible. This allows for instantaneous responses to touch, gesture, or voice commands, creating a truly seamless and immersive interactive experience for users.

Infrastructure Investment: The rollout of 5G infrastructure requires substantial investment from both network operators and businesses. The cost of upgrading existing digital signage networks to be 5G compatible may deter some companies, particularly smaller businesses with limited budgets. 

Technical Complexity: Integrating 5G technology into existing digital signage systems can be complex, requiring specialized knowledge and expertise. This could be a challenge for businesses without the necessary technical resources or expertise, potentially leading to delays and increased costs.

Data Privacy Concerns: The increased data collection and personalization capabilities of 5G-powered digital signage raise concerns about data privacy and security. 

For instance, LinkNYC's plan to roll out 2,000 5G kiosks in New York City was met with privacy concerns.  The kiosks collect anonymized MAC addresses, and while LinkNYC states they don't store browsing history, the presence of activatable cameras and the collection of any data has made the public worried about information privacy and the potential for expanded monitoring in public spaces. 

Content Creation Challenges: The high-resolution, data-intensive content required for 5G-enabled digital signage demands a significant investment in content creation resources. Not all businesses may have the budget or expertise to produce such content, potentially limiting the effectiveness of their 5G-powered displays.
